What Is Foil Stamping? Metallic Finishes in Printing

Foil stamping is a finishing process that transfers a thin metallic film onto paper using a heated die and pressure. The result is a mirror-bright metallic surface, classically gold or silver, also available in colours and holographic patterns, that no ink can reproduce, because ink reflects light diffusely while foil reflects it like metal.

Because each foil job needs a custom die, it is a true finishing craft: the die strikes the foil against the sheet, bonding the film exactly where the die's raised surface touches.

Where foil earns its cost

Foil belongs where a piece must read as premium in the hand: wedding invitations, luxury packaging, certificate seals, logo marks on high-end cards. It pairs naturally with heavy uncoated stocks, where the contrast between matte paper and bright metal is strongest.

Foil vs spot UV

Both are selective finishes applied to chosen areas, but they answer different briefs. Foil is metallic and opaque, it replaces the surface. Spot UV is a transparent gloss that lets the printed colour underneath show through. Spot UV also runs faster and at lower cost, which is why it is the usual choice for business cards that want shine without the metallic look.

Is foil stamping the same as metallic ink?

No. Metallic inks contain reflective particles but still read as ink, a soft shimmer. Foil is an actual metallised film, so it reflects light like a mirror. Side by side the difference is unmistakable.

Why does foil stamping cost more than other finishes?

Each design needs a custom metal die, and the stamping is a separate press pass. The die cost is fixed, so foil gets more economical per piece as quantities rise.

Can foil and spot UV be combined?

Yes, high-end pieces often use both: foil for a logo, spot UV for a pattern. Each needs its own setup, so plan the artwork with both finishes marked on separate layers.
