What Are Grommets on a Banner?

Grommets are the small metal rings pressed into the edges of a vinyl banner. They reinforce the hanging holes so rope, zip ties, bungee cords or hooks pull against metal instead of tearing through the material.

On our banners, grommets are an option you choose when you order, not a fixed default: you pick where they go, or no grommets at all if the banner will be framed, taped or mounted another way.

Placement and spacing

Corners are the minimum for a banner that hangs from its own edges; on longer banners, grommets spaced along the edges keep it from bellying and flapping between attachment points. Outdoors, more attachment points spread the wind load, which is what decides whether a banner survives a gusty weekend on a fence.

Grommet options by banner size

The choices depend on the size. Small banners (18 x 24 to 24 x 36) offer all 4 corners or the top 2 corners. Mid sizes (24 x 72, 36 x 36, 36 x 48, 48 x 48) add one spaced option, every 18 inches or every 2 feet. The 36-inch banners from 36 x 60 up offer every 18 inches, all around or along the top only; the 48-inch banners from 48 x 60 up offer every 2 feet, all around or along the top only. The 60-inch banners offer spaced grommets, every 18 inches or every 2 feet depending on the size. No grommets is available on every size.

Pole pockets, D-rings and wind slits

Grommets are not the only way to hang a banner. In the trade, pole pockets (a sleeve sewn into an edge for a rod), D-rings for tensioned installs and wind slits for large exposed banners are common alternatives. They are not part of our online banner options; ask the shop if your installation needs one of them.

Which one for your job?

Choose corner grommets for small banners on walls, railings and booths, spaced grommets (every 18 inches or 2 feet) for long banners on fences and scaffolding, top-only grommets when the banner hangs from a rail and should drape, and no grommets when the banner will be framed, taped or slid into a stand. For very windy, exposed spots, ask the shop before you order.
