What Is Aluminum Composite (Dibond)? Permanent Sign Panels Explained
Aluminum composite (ACM or ACP, often called Dibond after a well-known brand) is a sign panel made of two thin aluminum sheets bonded to a solid plastic core. The result is rigid and very flat like metal, but much lighter than solid aluminum and easy to cut.
It is the standard material for signs meant to stay up for years: storefront and building signs, real-estate and property signs, parking and regulatory signs, and premium indoor panels.
Why it is the permanent-sign material
The aluminum skins do not absorb water, rot or warp the way paper-faced or foamed boards can, and they keep the panel flat across large sizes and temperature swings. Signs are commonly made from 3 mm panels, and the surface takes UV-printed ink directly. Edges are clean and can be routed or cut to shape, and panels can be drilled for screws or mounted with standoffs or rails.
Aluminum composite vs other rigid boards
Coroplast is cheaper and lighter, built for temporary outdoor signs measured in weeks or a season. PVC (Sintra) is smooth and durable for indoor and sheltered use but can bow in strong heat. Foamcore is for light indoor displays. Aluminum composite costs more than all three because it is meant to outlast them.
Ordering aluminum composite signs
Aluminum composite is not one of the board options in our online solid-sign ordering, which covers coroplast, foamcore, Sintra, styrene and card stock. Other materials are available through the shop: contact us with the size, quantity and where the sign will be mounted, and we will tell you what we can do and quote it.
Which one for your job?
Choose aluminum composite for signs that must stay outdoors for years or carry a premium look indoors. For a season-long or event sign, coroplast does the job for less; for a durable indoor sign, PVC is often enough.
Common questions
What is Dibond?
Dibond is a brand of aluminum composite panel: two thin aluminum sheets around a plastic core. Sign makers often use the name for aluminum composite in general.
Is aluminum composite better than coroplast?
For permanent signs, yes: it stays flat, takes weather and looks finished. For short-term signs like elections, open houses or events, coroplast is the sensible, cheaper choice.
Can I order aluminum composite signs online?
Not through the online options, which list coroplast, foamcore, Sintra, styrene and card stock. Contact the shop with your size and quantity for aluminum composite.
