What Is Spot UV? Glossy Highlights in Printing, Explained

Spot UV is a clear, high-gloss varnish applied to specific areas of a printed piece and instantly hardened (cured) under ultraviolet light. "Spot" means it goes only where you choose, a logo, a name, a pattern, instead of flooding the whole sheet.

The effect works by contrast: a glossy, slightly raised highlight over a matte surface catches light and invites touch. It is the difference you feel when a business card's logo shines while the card around it stays soft matte. At our shop, spot varnish runs on a dedicated Duplo spot coater after printing.

How spot UV is applied

The piece is printed and (usually) matte-laminated first. The spot varnish is then laid down only on the areas defined in your artwork's varnish layer and cured under UV lamps in seconds, so it ships the same day it is coated. The raised gloss is subtle in thickness but unmistakable in light.

What your file needs

A spot UV job needs one extra element: a varnish mask, a solid black shape on its own layer marking exactly where the gloss goes. Vector shapes give the cleanest edge. Fine lines under about 1 pt and small type tend to fill in, so keep spot areas bold.

Which one for your job?

Choose spot UV when you want a premium feel without foil's metallic look: logos on business cards, titles on covers, patterns on packaging. Skip it on uncoated stocks, the varnish needs a coated or laminated surface to sit on, and on pieces that will be written on.

Common questions

Is spot UV the same as lamination?

No. Lamination covers the entire surface with a protective film, matte or glossy. Spot UV is a varnish applied only to selected areas, usually on top of matte lamination, precisely for the contrast.

Does spot UV protect the card?

Only the varnished areas, and that is not its job. Protection comes from the lamination underneath; spot UV is a visual and tactile finish.

Can spot UV go on both sides?

Yes. Each side needs its own varnish mask in the artwork. Many designs use it on the logo side only, which reads as more deliberate.
